8 tips to survive a sale
1. Come early
Sale events tend to be messy, packed and chaotic. If you want to avoid
the crowd, at least for a few hours, come early. Being the first one in
the store also gives you first dibs on good bargains. Plus, you’ll save a
lot of time not having to dig through the mountains of clothes that
frenzied shoppers create.
2. Wear the uniform
Believe it or not, there is what we call a “basic shoppers’ uniform,”
consisting of a tank top, long skirt and flats. The logic: to easily fit
clothes outside a fitting room. You can just put blouses over or
skirt/shorts under and you’re good to go. Never ever wear anything with
buttons or laces. They’re a drag to remove. (To the men, since you don’t
really like to shop, you don’t get a uniform.)
3. Go on the first day and the last day
Want the pick of the litter? Come on the first day. By the second or
third days, the best ones would have already been snatched up. Some
stores give additional discounts on the last day of the sale, too.
4. Know how deep and when
Most stores will have a discount ceiling and a schedule. Take note: If a
store just gives 50% off and you don’t need the item, hold off buying
until the sale reaches its ceiling of 70%. Wait and you shall be
rewarded. By then, some stores may also be offering a buy-one-take-one
promo at 50% off (which means you only pay 25% of the price).
